The charming bulldog is believed to have originated in the British Isles where he was originally
used for the sport of bull baiting (see below), hence the name.
The bulldog's most endearing feature, the facial squish and wrinkles, can also be a little troublesome, needing daily
cleaning and sometimes causing breathing issues.
Just the same, it's hard to resist a bulldog's endearing snorts, courageous demeanor, loveable
nature and friendly disposition. Bulldogs make good companions and do well with both people and other pets.
Some History on the Bulldog Dog Breed
The bulldog was used prominently in the 1500's for the cruel sport of bullbaiting, where the
bulldog would grab hold of the bulls nose and hang on at all costs, often to the loss of the
bulldog's life. Fortunately, in the 1800's bullbaiting was outlawed,
and a few select breeders decided to preserve the breed for compan- ionship rather than sport.
These breeders did a good job of breeding out the ferocious, vicous nature needed for bullbaiting and
replacing it with qualities more ideal to that of companion.
Today, the bulldog
is known for it's extraordinary calm nature, friendly demeanor, sweet tempermate and kind disposition.
