Some History on the Golden Retriever
 |
Potential contributers to the origin of the breed include
the Irish Setter, the Newfoundland and various water spaniels.
Some of the earlier records of the Golden Retriever dog breed can be traced back to
Scotland in the mid 1800's where Lord Tweedmouth took credit for the development of the breed.
Lord Tweedmouth's quest began with a single yellow wavy coated male puppy he named Nous,
that came from a litter of otherwise black retriever puppies.
By 1890 Nous' descendants in the line were believed to be aboout
47% setter, 35% newsfoundlad, 12% springer spaniel and 6% water dog.
Apparently Lord Tweedmouth was successful in his intention to create a dog that was
loyal and kind, yet spirited and energentic, as well as, an enthusiastic retriever of water fowl.
As they became popular in the English show ring in the early 1900's, the golden retriever
was originally known as the Flat-coated Retriever, Golden variety. The United States saw it's
first Goldens in the variety of the time the late 1800's.
