A long time ago I was sitting in the coral next to my barn when a bird landed on the corral post
just outside the barn door ... where it proceeded to sing and chirp pretty little sounds.
It was just seconds later when my cat Diamond came slowly around the
corner from the inside of the barn ... she had spotted the unsuspecting bird.
There was a bush between them
at this time, so the bird had not yet spotted her. She crouched poised for action. It was
what happened next that really threw me for a loop - my cat started to imitate the bird - I mean
really imitate it. Diamond was making chirping warbling sounds just the like the bird,
apparently in an attempt to lure the bird closer for the kill. My first reaction was that I
had gone crazy, afterall I had been a little stressed out at the time. I called
my animal expert guru, a friend who had lived in the country most her life.

She wasn't surprised at all, she had heard of this happening before and it was known
as "luring". Further, there are two interesting facts to consider about this incident.
First, it happened over five years ago and I have never witnessed it since. That seems odd to me
for some reason, maybe it is considered a secret cat thing that people are'nt supposed to know about
and she just slipped up on this one occasion. The other thing to point out is that Diamond is
one of those cats that makes churtle gutteral sounds by nature, something I have seen in only a few
cats. It may be that a cat's ability to make bird noises requires this ability and that not all of
them have the capability to do so.

Recently, I have taken an interest in the subject again
and I decided to see what I could find on the Internet regarding this matter. In actuality, I
found almost nothing. I did find a few sites that mentioned that cougars
and pumas make chirping noises to lure birds in when hunting. I know, maybe Diamond thinks she's a cougar.
